Deb Meyer (00:00.588)

Welcome to Podcasthon Week. Over 1,500 podcasters are uniting from March 15th to 21st to raise awareness for the charities of their choice. And my charity of choice is Compass Catholic Ministries. I'm so excited to have Camilla Gonzalez join me today. And for those of you who aren't familiar with this ministry, I'd like to think of it as an alternative to Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University.

So if you're a parent focused on financial stewardship, I think you're going to get a lot of value from this episode. And if not, maybe you could head over to Podcastthon, which is P-O-D-C-A-S-T-H-O-N.org to find other charities doing some amazing work.

Camilla, welcome to the Beyond Budgets podcast! Can you tell listeners a little bit about yourself, like where you're based and how long you've been involved with Compass Catholic Ministries?

Camila Gonzalez (01:00.032)

Thank you so much for having me. I am currently based in South Florida. I've only been living here for a few years. I was originally born in Texas. So I came here to Florida and I started working for Compass Catholic Ministries about a year and a half ago. So just a little bit over a year.

Deb Meyer (01:24.59)

Awesome. Okay, okay. And prior to that, what were you involved with?

Camila Gonzalez (01:30.498)

So prior to Compass Catholic, I actually was working at a local parish in South Florida. I was the director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries. So I basically just ran the development for faith formation for all youth of the parish that was about 2,500. So was a very large parish and I worked there for about three years.

Deb Meyer (01:48.299)

Wow. That's awesome. Well, I know there's a cool story behind Compass Catholic. John and Evelyn Bean started it several years ago. Could you share a little bit about their story and how they came into Compass Catholic?

Camila Gonzalez (02:03.586)

Sure, I'd be happy to. So John and Evelyn Bean, originally they were taking a Bible study that was a non-denominational Bible study under the name of Crown. This was about 25 years ago. And the reason that they wanted to join this Bible study that was talking about finances is because they tried to start a business and unfortunately it did not go well. After five years, they lost over 25.

Deb Meyer (02:27.736)

Mmm.

Camila Gonzalez (02:32.086)

$250,000, I'm sorry, $250,000, yes. And so, you know, they were in this huge issue, you know, they had a lot of debt and they just didn't know what to do. So when they took this course, they realized that they had a lot of things to change in their life, a lot of decisions that they had to change. And so after they took this financial class, they realized that it was really helpful and they decided that they wanted to create a version that was more in line with their specific faith, the Catholic faith. And so they partnered with Howard Dayton, which was the one who created the program. He was actually David's mentor, Dave Ramsey's mentor.

And so they created Compass Catholic Ministries and they just wanted to give back. Little by little, they were able to get out of debt and get back on their feet. And they realized that giving everything back to God is a way that he's gonna give back to you as well. And so they just started changing the way that they manage their money. And now it's all history. We are very happy to have the ministry running as a nonprofit organization that helps family and individuals learn about money management.

Deb Meyer (03:47.704)

Awesome. That's such a great story because I think for a lot of people, you know, they start off in a place where they think they have a good foundation. But then as they're getting into something like this with a business, a small business, taking some of those risks as entrepreneurial risks, it doesn't always pan out the way you expect it to. Right. Or even for people who are in salaried positions, just that idea that they have to go in and, you know,

they might not have had a great money upbringing or good models from their parents of what responsible money management looks like. So just getting a new pathway, especially as a married couple, it is challenging in your early years as you're trying to navigate things like that. So I love the story of John and Evelyn and how they've really taken what they've learned from it and used it to fund this ministry and really make it what it is today.

so many years later.

Camila Gonzalez (04:44.59)

Absolutely, absolutely. And you know, we're very blessed to still have John be a part of our ministry. He's still very active as a member of the board of directors. And you know, it's beautiful that they went through the story together, you know, as a married couple, you know, we learned a lot of things about how I mean, it's actually common knowledge. A lot of couples fight about finances, you know, it's a big issue in marriage. so John and Evelyn have shared their testimony before saying that, you know, a lot of

Deb Meyer (04:58.022)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (05:06.714)

Right. Yeah.

Camila Gonzalez (05:13.154)

these financial issues affected their marriage and being able to get through it together was huge. And so they started creating new content for this organization that also focuses on marriage life, know, prepping, getting ready for marriage, having that talk, you know. So we have a book that's actually based on that, God, Marriage and Money. It's based on, you know, how to have an honest conversation about money, just the two people, know. Man and woman just talk about, you

Deb Meyer (05:25.532)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (05:30.64)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (05:40.016)

Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (05:43.35)

We have to be on the same page about our finances.

Deb Meyer (05:47.48)

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Well, and I know here at Beyond Budgets, we focus a lot on expanding that conversation beyond budgeting, right? We delve into tax planning, investing, other financial advisory topics. But today is actually quite different. So I do want to focus on your ministry in particular with that financial stewardship and responsibility at a very foundational level. Can you explain some of those courses offered by the ministry, especially for parents? I know you just mentioned one of them, and that's more for

or people that are looking to get married soon?

Camila Gonzalez (06:25.27)

Yes. Yes. So the first one I mentioned was called God, Marriage and Money. So it is just a book that's based off of our other workbooks that we have. So what we offer are six-week studies. Okay. So some of them are a little bit longer. Some of them are shorter, but these studies are basically a process to learn about managing your money.

Deb Meyer (06:30.352)

Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (06:49.728)

The first one I mentioned, God, marriage and money is specifically meant for married couples, either if they're engaged or if they're already married. It's useful for both. But if they're engaged, it's good because you can get ahead of that, you know, get ahead of the problems that you might face in the future when finances, you know, arises in the marriage. But it's a good way to not focus so much on spending so much money on the wedding and being so much,

So more distracted, it's really just a way to have an honest conversation and discussion about your finances before the wedding happens. But it's also a good refresher if a couple's already married and maybe has never had that conversation before.

Deb Meyer (07:29.564)

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Maybe people who had separate accounts and are trying to now merge them as a married couple, something like that. Okay.

Camila Gonzalez (07:33.258)

Exactly. Exactly. So our main study is called Faith and Money Matters. So this is a six week course where participants will learn how to create a spending plan, get out of debt, live completely and financially with integrity, start saving and investing for long-term well-being, and also just to develop a generosity plan that will help improve their lives because

Deb Meyer (07:41.18)

Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (08:01.046)

An important aspect of what we teach through our organization is stewardship. And stewardship is a really big topic for us because it's basically talking about the principle of responsibility and managing your resources. So whether it be your time, your talent, or your treasure, everything should be done with intention and purpose. And so that's what we call stewardship. It's making sure that everything is done from a perspective that is good.

Deb Meyer (08:28.604)

Well, and I think when you, at least when I think about stewardship, it's not just about the financial resources you may or may not have, but really how you're stewarding all the resources God's giving you. if it's, well, just as an example, actually going back to one of the prior episodes, I had recorded it after I did the Compass Catholic Retreat in November of last year.

And I know specifically just talking about that emotional attachment to money, having that sense of being free from looking at money as the ultimate source of success and really focusing more on that relationship with Christ, how you're putting God first in your life and then how finances can flow from that by honoring God in all aspects of your life, right?

Camila Gonzalez (09:01.262)

Mm.

Camila Gonzalez (09:21.464)

Absolutely. Absolutely. And we talk about that in the first week of our study, you know, is just having that perspective of, know, everything was given to us. And so we are placed as, you know, responsible stewards to all material things. And, you know, when you learn to give back with purpose and when you learn to do everything for, you know, His glory, you'll see that, you know, it's so much more fulfilling in your life and it's more stable because

Deb Meyer (09:43.942)

Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (09:50.38)

You know, I myself took the class and I realized that I was never giving anything back. I mean, in the second or first week, you you do a spending plan, you you track your spending for 30 days and it categorizes where you spend your money. And one of the categories they have you fill out is how much do you give back, you know, to charities, to your church, wherever. And I didn't have anything there in that list. And so I realized I...

Deb Meyer (09:55.516)

Mm.

Deb Meyer (10:09.296)

Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (10:17.442)

I'm not giving any money to anyone. I'm just spending on myself really, you know? And so it's a really good perspective to see that whether it be just financially supporting, you know, a charity in need or your church, it's also categorizing where do I spend my time? Because it also asks, you know, do you ever volunteer at your local food pantry or at an organization that needs it? And, you know, I wasn't. So it was a really good way to see that all of us

Deb Meyer (10:38.566)

Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (10:45.986)

have something to offer. And our money is also something that shouldn't be taken selfishly. And so it's really beautiful to have this class just lay it all out in such a beautiful perspective. And it's also, it's great because a lot of people learn how to get out of debt and how to have enough to be able to finally be generous.

Deb Meyer (10:47.9)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (11:05.052)

So let's talk logistics. So let's say someone's really interested in taking one of these courses. Is it only available at specific churches in their area or is there another online option that they could consider and what's kind of the timing and cadence of doing an online version?

Camila Gonzalez (11:22.35)

Sure, that's a great question. So our classes usually do run within a parish setting. We do love to say that our classes are best done in small groups in parishes and that's the way that we see the best discussion come out when a group of 12 people will be at a parish and they take this class together. But a lot of people don't have Compass Catholic present at their church. And so what we do in those cases is that we offer online classes year round.

Right now we're currently going through one of our studies, that's a five week study that started last week. And then this upcoming spring, we have the Faith and Money Matters course that will be given online for those people who might not be able to join in person. But even if someone is not able to online or physical, we do have the books available for purchase. So anyone could just purchase the workbook and take it at their own pace. The six week study can just be read at however,

Deb Meyer (11:56.4)

Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (12:22.464)

however fast or slow you'd like to go and that's just on our website. Our website is compasscatholic.org.

Deb Meyer (12:29.092)

Awesome, okay. So let's dig into that even more. So let's say someone wants to do that online or they order the workbook and maybe they get into the online course. Is the online course really just more accountability around doing the activities in the workbook? Is that the idea that you're kind of having this small group or at the parish level if you're fortunate to be in a parish that offers it already? Like is it really just...

Camila Gonzalez (12:38.094)

Mm.

Camila Gonzalez (12:53.422)

Mm.

Deb Meyer (12:56.654)

being able to share openly some of the experiences you're having as you're going through the material.

Camila Gonzalez (13:01.742)

It's a little bit of both, right? So when the participant buys a workbook and they are, let's say they log into an online class, let's say that they don't have a parish with Compass Active there, it's more than just accountability. It's about being able to walk this journey with other people and discuss everything that's the content in this workbook, right? So you have a lot of time to read on your own and answer questions on your own.

When you come into the virtual class or the physical class, you'll have facilitators who are trained by Compass Catholic staff. And those facilitators will help guide a conversation so that you can discuss everything that you learned while you were reading at home. So you come prepared, you come already reading what was the chapters for the week, and you're just able to talk about it. You're able to discuss.

any questions that you have or any doubts that you might have or if you had any issues with the spending categories or with the different practical applications that we have included for the financial well-being in this workbook. So it's really great because if you take the class on your own, if you just buy the workbook, you won't really have other people to discuss it with.

And so that's why we encourage the small group setting, right? Because you can hear other people's experiences and it's a really beautiful way to just learn from one another and just sort of take this class on a journey with other people. And it's really transformative. It's a really beautiful experience.

Deb Meyer (14:16.934)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (14:33.818)

Right, that's awesome. So for someone that's not Catholic or maybe they've fallen away from the Catholic Church, used to be Catholic years ago, could they still take a course or buy a workbook and go through this curriculum? Okay.

Camila Gonzalez (14:46.446)

Absolutely. Absolutely. We're not trying to, you know, exclude anyone when it comes to our studies. We did want to be authentically Catholic and that's because we wanted to bring our faith into something that we realized that the Bible has more than 2,500 verses on money and possessions. So we brought those scripture verses into our workbook because if the Lord has something to say about money, we should listen to him, right?

Deb Meyer (14:54.108)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (14:58.588)

Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (15:13.94)

And even if you're not Catholic, it's still really, really, really useful material on financial management, right? So we have very practical applications during every week. There's a portion of scripture that you read, and then there's a portion of actual content of how to get out of debt, you know, how to live with financial integrity, creating a spending plan and categorizing where you're spending your money.

Deb Meyer (15:21.584)

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (15:38.604)

I mean snowballing your debt. All of these things are very good for someone who might not know how to do all of those things to be walked through it within the context of scripture as well.

Deb Meyer (15:39.132)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (15:48.924)

Well, and I think one of the other cool things that at least I was impressed with being on the more financial advisory side, just seeing the people that are facilitating these groups in the parishes, they've been through the program themselves, right? I mean, I think every facilitator has been through the program on a personal basis. That's awesome.

Camila Gonzalez (16:05.143)

Yes.

Camila Gonzalez (16:09.088)

Yes, and a good thing is that anyone can be a facilitator. So we don't necessarily pick and choose financial advisors or financial coaches or financial professionals to be a facilitator. A facilitator is anyone who's taken the course and has the experience already, the knowledge of where the course leads you, and then they just help guide the discussion. But it is really useful that they've already taken the course and they've have

Deb Meyer (16:28.572)

Mm-hmm.

Yeah.

Camila Gonzalez (16:34.702)

the knowledge and experience of how it flows. And it's beautiful because you can take the class two, three, four, five times and it's a different experience every time.

Deb Meyer (16:44.185)

Mm-hmm. And then for people that are looking even beyond the courses or the workbooks, what other kind of resources do you have available?

Camila Gonzalez (16:53.464)

Sure, we offer webinars. Those are free to anyone in the public. We have different podcasts available on our website, as well as blogs. These blogs are just sort of helping you see the sort of different things that are going on in life and how you can have your perspective. know, for example, for the past Christmas season that we just finished is we had a blog come out that talks about, you know, overspending during Christmas time and how can you put that into perspective with your finances. So it's really practical.

things that are good for people to just kind of read. We have newsletters that go out. Those newsletters include all of the things that we offer. We have social media, blog posts, everything is available for the public. We have a YouTube channel as well that has different sort of videos and talks about finances. Some of them are just shorter clips, you know, that talks about a specific topic in money management.

Deb Meyer (17:47.141)

Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (17:47.392)

And so those are all free for the public. So I encourage everyone who's listening to check us out at Compass Catholic Ministries. We have the YouTube channel, but our website again is compasscatholic.org.

Deb Meyer (17:59.59)

Nice. Okay. Okay. Great. So let's say someone's going through this experience. They're feeling like, okay, this has helped me so much. I'm really interested in kind of taking that next step. I want to dive deeper. I want to get more involved. Is that next step, for potentially like some money coaching? What would be a good, you know, they get a lot of value, but they still need some additional help along the way. What, what other resources do you have available in that regard?

Camila Gonzalez (18:14.478)

Hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (18:29.102)

Sure, and that's a great question. for those people who want the next step, and I think it's great that you said, you know, after they take the course, because we definitely say that taking the course is the best way. I mean, a six week study is super in depth, right? And if someone wants that extra step, we have money coaches available who are volunteers actually, who have taken our course, who are very well versed with our ministry, who will help you along the way in a personal one-on-one level to just walk you through

what you've already taken with the course and see if they can give you any additional tips and advice and help.

Deb Meyer (19:03.036)

Okay, great. Yeah, that's really helpful because I know at least from the financial advisory side, sometimes I come across clients that really need help more on the cash flow and budgeting side of things. And my expertise isn't as much in that as it is, you people that have the excess cash flow and are looking at investment strategies, tax planning, things like that, where we're going a different kind of level beyond. But

It is really hard to get some of those foundational concepts on your own. There's a lot of resources out there and I think there's just so much noise sometimes and it's hard to know like who to actually listen to. So for anyone that has that kind of faith perspective that's looking to incorporate their finances and faith in a strategic way, I mean, that's why I'm choosing to highlight Cumma Schatholite because I do think it's so important to have that foundational knowledge and

be able to build off of it.

Camila Gonzalez (20:01.336)

Thank you. And we appreciate that. Our financial coaches are certified and we're very happy to have them serving as volunteers for those people who are in need. And it's a really great resource.

Deb Meyer (20:04.987)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (20:13.306)

Well, and the money coaching is also probably pretty affordable, like all things considered, because I at least know typically if I'm sending someone to an external money coach that's not affiliated with Compass Catholic, like they might be paying 300 bucks a month or whatever to get coaching services. I don't think it's the same kind of fee structure because it's a ministry, right?

Camila Gonzalez (20:33.198)

Right, since we are a certified nonprofit organization, we wanted to start off with a low cost, so it's $25 for sessions. And we just wanted to give people something that was affordable. I mean, if they're already in financial crisis, we don't want to worsen that, you know? And so, and yes, you know, we also run off of donations. The only profits we make are off of our books.

Deb Meyer (20:39.034)

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (20:52.197)

Right.

Deb Meyer (20:57.052)

Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (20:59.212)

So we're happy to receive donations via our website and the support of our money coaching program. But we, and know, John, who created this ministry, we wanted to give back. You he learned so much from the original course that he was like, you know, if this got me out of debt, then we need to help and share this with other people as well.

Deb Meyer (21:22.332)

Right. Yeah. I love the heart behind the organization and just thinking about some of the pillars of it. It really is just a neat mission. So thank you.

Camila Gonzalez (21:25.422)

Thank you.

Camila Gonzalez (21:33.514)

I appreciate that. Yeah. And I'm so happy to be a part of it as well. It's really something that brings satisfaction to the end of my day of being able to serve in a ministry that does good for others.

Deb Meyer (21:46.076)

So tell me a little bit more about Compass Catholic's presence. I know you guys are actually international, right? You have presence both here in the US and globally. Could you share a little bit more about locations and...

Camila Gonzalez (21:57.65)

Sure, yes, yes, we are quite active now. We are in multiple dioceses across the United States. We are in multiple countries. Our biggest presence is actually in Latin America. So we have a lot of Latin American countries that are very strong with the ministries. I think Colombia is probably one of the strongest countries that we have right now. They just really expanded with the amount of volunteers.

We have people in Malaysia, Singapore, and New Zealand, and we're starting to offer classes this year in Vancouver for the first time in Canada. So we're really excited to start expanding more. mean, our dream is to just be in every parish if possible, every country. And I think a beautiful thing to note about our ministries is that we're a small team. You know, the staff itself is a small team, but

The way that we run our ministries is through volunteers, right? We train facilitators, facilitators belong to their parish or their small group, and they put on the course. So we have thousands of volunteers who are making this ministry possible. So it's really beautiful to see how people just decide to be a part of this organization and that's what's keeping us going.

Deb Meyer (22:57.296)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (23:05.03)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (23:13.606)

Well, and it's really full circle if you think about it because typically people are starting with that stewardship mindset. And as we said before, stewardship is not just about treasure, but giving of time. So figuring out a way to be involved with the ministry after you've benefited from it, it's a really cool, again, full circle experience.

Camila Gonzalez (23:26.402)

Yes.

Camila Gonzalez (23:30.89)

Yes, we definitely invite all of our participants after they take the course to become a facilitator. Share what you've, if you gained anything, share, give back, become a facilitator, donate, or invite someone else to take the class. It's a really beautiful thing. And I think you're right. It is full circle. It is full circle.

Deb Meyer (23:39.205)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (23:45.137)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (23:51.056)

Yeah, awesome. So what are some of the plans for expansion in the future? guess if you could wave the magic wand and say, okay, five, 10 years from now, what Compass Catholic looks like, what would that ministry be?

Camila Gonzalez (23:57.911)

Yeah

Camila Gonzalez (24:03.774)

If I could wave the wand. So I think increasing accessibility is by expanding us, you know, just being able to be in multiple places. So one thing that I've noticed is when I ask someone if they've ever heard of Dave Ramsey, most people say yes. And then if I ask them the follow-up question, if you've ever heard of Compass Catholic Ministries, they usually say no. So just being able to be known would be great. I think it's just starting to expand our organization to as many places as possible.

Deb Meyer (24:33.041)

Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (24:33.334)

This also includes strengthening partnerships with other churches or organizations because there's actually quite a few organizations who teach financial stewardship that other people might be a part of that would be great to partner with. We want to develop new resources. It would be great to come out with more material at some point. And we always want to train more facilitators because as I mentioned before, the more facilitators we have, the more classes can be done.

It would be our dream to just continue to grow and be a part of most people's journey in their financial life.

Deb Meyer (25:10.81)

Yeah. Well, and I just think about even when I was at that retreat in November, just seeing some of the numbers of how you guys have grown over these last couple of years, it's been pretty astronomical growth. If I recall correctly, if I feel like it was a very tiny presence and then all of a sudden you're like, okay, we have so many different locations. Yeah, it's nuts.

Camila Gonzalez (25:26.388)

Yes.

Camila Gonzalez (25:32.514)

multiple countries, yes, yes. So there's a lot of potential. know, when I first started working here a year and a half ago, I realized that this ministry has so much great potential for growth because what we offer is really, really great material and it's impactful. It's more than a normal financial class. mean, it really, it goes to the core of why this all matters.

Deb Meyer (25:44.123)

Mm-hmm.

Deb Meyer (25:57.272)

Mm-hmm. Yeah. And so my encouragement, I guess, for any listeners that are interested in finding out more, number one, go to the website and I'm going to have Camilla mention it one more time. Just for those of you who didn't catch it, I'll also put it in the show notes. but I think it's also important to kind of take that next step after you go to the website to see, okay, what kind of resources am I looking for? it just more casual blog and podcast type stuff, or am I willing to dive deeper and really

change their trajectory because I think for a lot of people it's nice to read articles and get more information but to actually go in and do something is so much more it's going to create better results right if you're just reading about something passively versus actively doing it it's night and day difference so again my encouragement for anyone that's listening and interested in finding out more go to that website there are you

Camila Gonzalez (26:40.44)

Yes.

Deb Meyer (26:55.604)

I've been on the website before and I know there's different areas that you can find sources of information, even hear more about some of the story behind John and Evelyn and things like that. But I think Camilla gave a great, great synopsis of that earlier in the podcast. Any closing thoughts, I guess, Camilla, before we sign off here in terms of just who this ministry is really for and kind of what, what would be a great next step for someone to take?

Camila Gonzalez (27:06.23)

Mm-hmm.

Camila Gonzalez (27:25.048)

Sure, and thank you again for having me. And I think a final thought that I would give is actually what our founder usually loves saying. He says, it's not about the money, it's about the change. It's about having the peace of mind and freedom, financial freedom, and making an impact in other people's lives. Because that approach to finances is really what

Deb Meyer (27:37.372)

Mmm.

Camila Gonzalez (27:48.504)

brings it all to the center of why this matters. If you're putting your worth in your money, you're not gonna find your true worth there. And so we really encourage people to take the first step of this change with us. We'd invite them to check us out, compasscatholic.org again. it's really good because if anyone is out there listening and needs financial help, I think...

One tip I would give them is don't be afraid to ask for help. Don't be afraid to look and see how people can help you because you can't do it by yourself and you shouldn't. And that's what we're here for. We're here to help individuals and families say yes to God's call and learn how to really be financially free.

Deb Meyer (28:35.406)

Mm-hmm. Awesome. Okay. Thank you so much. This was great.

Camila Gonzalez (28:39.542)

Alright, well thank you once again for having us and hopefully we'll hear from you in the future.
